Australian Landscapes

The Australian landscape is diverse & dramatic. The land is ancient, principally empty and quite inhospitable, but it has rich rewards for those who are prepared to explore.

Dean Newitt has done some of the exploring on our behalf. From the cool alpine district of Victoria to the dry remotness of South Australia's Oodnadatta Track to the vivid hues of Palm Valley in the Northern Territory.

Australia's coast also reveals similar variety. From sharp ruggard coastline, like Point Hicks to the stillness of River esturies.

Dean Newitt's images of the Point Hicks Light House at dawn are spectacular; you can feel the icy chill in the air. In 'Morning Light' you can see the first glow of dawn just beyond the horizon.

Other images captured in Croajingalong National Park by Dean Newitt, like 'Mallacoota Meditation' and 'Serenity' are in stark contrast to Point Hicks, such is the diversity of Australia.

Australia Land Of Contrasts

Australia is a land of contrasts. It is a place for people who love the outdoors and have a sense of adventure. Be it camping by a secluded tropical stream(watch out for crocs!), absailing some of the most popular cliffs in the world, kyaking down graded rivers, or 4x4 driving in the desert.

The photographers who make a living out of photographing this vast country have to put themselves in all kinds of danger in order to capture images of spectacular beauty. One such photographer is Dean Newitt.

Dean Newitt is a photographer who uses Australia's beauty to communicate with the soul. His images from the Australian Alpine, like "Icy Vapor", make you feel as if you are there, you can almost feel your breath coming out in great icy puffs.

In contrast images like "Namatjira Drive Twilight" are so reminicent of that great Australian Aboriginal painter you can experience a connection to the land and it's not much of a stretch of the imagination to hear the digiridoo playing in the background.

Other images like "Mirage" give you such a sense of isolation, where "Serenity" bestows an impression of peace.

Certainly there are many talented photographers in Australia, but in my opinion Dean Newitt is a photographic artist who so precisely captures the physchic and spritual connection to this great land of contrasts.
